Thompson-Phelan Group recently helped Detroit Metropolitan Credit Union in a large renovation and reconstruction project in downtown Detroit. The building, built in 1968, was compromised by a difficult and inaccessible layout, which caused flexibility and growth problems. Mechanical and electrical systems had passed their useful lives as well.
The goal of the project was to alleviate these existing physical problems, provide a comfortable workplace, improve facilities for current members, and present an attractive and welcoming face to the public, many who simply did not recognize a major financial services center existed there.
The plan involved crafting a new atrium entrance and two-story lobby on Jefferson Avenue by enclosing an existing breezeway. This also created elevator access to both sides of the main floor for the first time. A continuation of this lobby at the rear provided a new pedestrian-friendly entrance from the rear parking lot. The former public lobby, narrow, dark, and barren, was replaced with a more friendly and up-to-date-version, while still providing security for employees. Upstairs, more office areas, a board room, and the employee's lounge were completely renovated. The lower rear entry structure now supports a spacious, upper-level, outdoor terrace for employees, complete with views of the Detroit River.
The new interior needed a brilliant composition of finishes and colors in order to project a more welcoming image. Millwork incorporates "green" wood products, as well as bright metal accents, and subtle lighting was used to create a lively new environment.
In overcoming these challenges, TPG was able to help a respected institution in the city of Detroit to look forward, offer a new and welcoming face to the public, and improve conditions for its members, something it was unable to do in its outmoded building.
